FSU set to return to Bright House Networks Field on February 26

Florida State University's baseball team will be returning to Bright House Networks Field on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. They will face the Philadelphia Phillies in an exhibition contest.

The news release from FSU which includes quotes from Seminoles head coach Mike Martin can be found here.

The 2007 exhibition game saw nearly 5,000 fans in the stands at Bright House Networks Field, many clad in FSU's colors of garnet and gold. The Seminoles enjoyed a 1-0 lead as Tony Thomas led off the game with a home run. The lead was short-lived as the Phillies scored four in their half of the first inning en route to a 12-4 Phillies win.

Former Threshers in the exhibition game included Chris Roberson who was hitless in just one at-bat. Additionally, pitchers Alfredo Simon and Joe Bisenius combined to give up just one run, and two hits, while striking out three in three innings.

Some news about former Threshers from St. Patrick's Day

Joe Bisenius picked up the win, his first of the Spring, against the New York Yankees. His line included one run, one hit, and three walks.

J.A. Happ is scheduled to start today in Ft. Myers against the Minnesota Twins. Don't know who else as of yet is making the trip down, or who is staying here for the game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Alfredo Simon, a Rule 5 pick from the 2006 draft, cleared waivers and was offered back to the Texas Rangers.

Former Thresher Alfredo Simon pitched today

Former Thresher Alfredo Simon pitched one and one-third innings today in Winter Haven as the Phillies lost to the Cleveland Indians 7-6. Simon struggled on the mound today, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk. On a positive note, he did strike out one batter.

Former Thresher Cole Hamels is scheduled to start for the Phillies tomorrow against the Boston Red Sox. Several hundred tickets for the Berm (grass, no chairs) will be released for sale starting at 9am Friday morning. Day of Game Tickets can only be purchased in person at the Bright House Networks Field Ticket Office. We will try to fit as many people as we can in the ballpark for a great afternoon of Phillies Spring Training baseball.

Former Thresher Alfredo Simon the focus of an article on phillyBurbs.com

Randy Miller has the story on phillyBurbs.com.

Now that he's back with the Phillies, Simon looks like a different person, as he's grown two inches and slimmed down from a hefty 270 to a solid 250.

For a time, Simon was regarded as a pretty decent pitching prospect for the Phillies, as he put up good ERAs five consecutive seasons as a starter before being shipped to San Francisco with Ricky Ledee in a 2004 trade deadline deal for Felix Rodriguez.

Former Thresher Alfredo Simon selected in 2006 Rule 5 Draft

The 2006 Rule 5 Draft has been completed.

It doesn't appear that it will have much of an effect on the Clearwater Threshers at present. However, former Thresher Alfredo Simon was selected with the 5th pick by the Baltimore Orioles. Simon spent most of the 2004 season with the Threshers before he was traded by the Phillies to the San Francisco Giants organization.

Simon struck out 107 batters in 134.2 innings and had a 3.27 ERA in 22 games for the Threshers.

MLB.com has a .pdf of all the 2006 Rule 5 draft picks that can be found here.

UPDATE 12/8/06 at 10:00am: Simon has been traded back from the Orioles to the Phillies.
